Bedford Borough Council’s Public Health team is encouraging residents to check on their vulnerable friends, relatives, and neighbours after an Amber Cold-Health Alert was issued.

The alert highlights the importance of community action during periods of extreme weather and will remain in place until 8 January. Councillor Martin Towler, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods and Communities: Health and Wellbeing, said: “During periods of extreme weather, hot and cold alike, we must look out for one another. The simple act of checking on a neighbour, family member, or friend can make a significant difference and ensure their safety and wellbeing.”

To support residents, the Council has partnered with local organisations to provide a network of Welcoming Spaces across Bedford Borough. These warm, inviting venues are open to everyone, offering a place to get warm, enjoy company, or spend time quietly. Many spaces also provide tea, coffee, Wi-Fi, board games, and baby-changing facilities. A full list of Welcoming Spaces, including Bedford Borough libraries, can be found at /benefits-and-support/welcoming-spaces/welcoming-spaces.

For medical concerns, residents are reminded to "think 111 first." Visit or call NHS 111 for advice and guidance on accessing urgent medical help. You can also receive advice from your local pharmacy. Visit to find your nearest one.

Additionally, the Met Office has issued a Yellow Warning for snow and ice in the East of England from midday on Saturday, 4 January, until 11:59pm on Sunday, 5 January. For updates on gritting and the latest weather conditions, visit the Council’s dedicated Winter Updates page at .
